Continuing on Norway leg of my
travels, I set off from Oslo by train for
the port city of Bergen. Little did I know
what a delightful trip this would turn
out to be
The train ploughed through vast
snowfields reminding of scenes from
Dr. Zhivago..

In the claustrophobic confines of the
compartment, we were five young
travellers from different countries, 3
friends. Sharing our experiences, and
consulting the ubiquitous "Europe on
$20 a day" we suddenly decided on a
diversion.
We got off the train at Myrdal, the
railway station being nothing more than
a lonely log cabin with a hot-chocolate
vending machine. We waited in its
warmth for a little train that took us into
the valley to a place called Flam.

It was pitch dark in the afternoon in that part in winter, and we made for the Brekke family's house where we stayed for 2 days (if you ever visit Flam, do go to the Brekke family house and see my visitor book entry of October/ November 1979).

In the morning next day, we saw what a beautiful little village was Flam, located at the head of a fjord. The whole day was spent loitering around and enjoying the stay at the Brekke house and the company of fellow travellers (see pic).

Next day, we took the ferry which started from the fjord-head. For the next couple of hours, as the boat cruised silently through the fjord, it seemed as clean, pure, beautiful, silent, and blissful as only probably heaven could be (see pics).
We left the ferry at Gudwangen, took a coach (bus) to the railway station at Voss, where we re-joined the original rail-route on our journey to Bergen.

Were it not for the impromptu diversion, we would have missed one of the most enchanting journey, pleasant stay and company of friends that Flam, the fjord, the Brekke house and fellow travellers provided.
